Hoe teken je een parel. (How to draw a pearl)

Zoals een aantal van jullie weten, hou ik erg van zengems tekenen. Nu was ik laatst met een tile bezig waar ik een blauwe zengem op had getekend met erachter de tangle onamato als ketting. Nu leek het mee een leuk idee om de cirkels in onamato te kleuren als parels. Alleen hoe doe je dat?

(As some of you know, I like to draw zengems very much. The other day I was drawing a blue zengem on a tile with tangle onamato behind it. I thought it might be a nice idea too color the orbs in onamato as pearls. But how do you do that?)

Ik ben op zoek gegaan naar tutorials hoe je een parel tekent en kleurt, Het meeste is te vinden op youtube. Een aantal ervan zijn met aquarelverf of met een basis van copic markers. Maar uiteindelijk vond ik een tutorial met kleurpotlood en dat is deze. Alleen vond ik het eindresultaat te licht om mooi bij mijn blauwe zengems te passen. Na wat zelf uitproberen kwam ik op  een donkerder resultaat wat er mooi bij paste, zie hieronder.

(I searched for tutorials how to draw or color a pearl. Most of them can be found on youtube. Some of them were painted with watercolors and some started with copic markers. Finally I found a tutorial with colored pencils see here. Only I found the pearl too light compared to the blue zengem. After trying out some colored pearls, I found a way to make them darker, see the tile below.)

Nu dacht ik misschien is het wel leuk om er zelf een tutorial voor te schrijven voor een donkere parel en zo geschiedde. Het eerste stukje van de video heb ik gevolgd, maar na een paar stappen doe ik het anders. In de video zijn de Prismacolor potloden gebruikt, ik heb de Bruynzeel design potloden gebruikt. Deze ontlopen elkaar niet veel in gebruik, maar zelf heb ik een lichte voorkeur voor de Bruynzeel design potloden voor het kleuren van zengems. Ik gebruik drie kleuren en wit om deels te mengen. De drie kleuren zijn een donkerblauwe (prussian blue nr:58) een middelblauwe (cobalt blue nr;55) en een blauw groenige (dark leafgreen nr:62). Dezelfde kleuren die ik voor de zengem heb gebruikt. De volgende kleuren van de Prismacolor potloden  uit, een doos van 72 kleuren, komen hier het meest mee overeen PC901 (indigo blue). PC906 (copenhagen blue) en PC992 (light aqua).

(Then I thought it might be a good idea to write a tutorial for coloring a dark pearl. I followed the first  part of the video, but after a few steps I changed the next steps. In the video Prismacolor pencils are being used, I used the Bruynzeel design colored pencils. Bruynzeel is a Dutch brand. These pencils are about the same with coloring, soft and bright colors, but I have a slight preference for the Bruynzeel design colored pencils for coloring zengems. I have used three colors, and a white pencil for blending partially. The three colors are prussian blue nr:58, cobalt blue nr:55 and dark leafgreen nr:62. I have used the same colors for the zengems.The following colors of the Prismacolor pencils, from a box 0f 72 pencils, resemble the colors of the Bruynzeel design pencils the most, PC901 (indigo blue). PC906 (copenhagen blue) and PC992 (light aqua).)

1 - Je begint met het vast stellen waar de lichtbron staat, in dit geval recht boven de parel. Dan teken je heel lichtjes een klein cirkeltje in de bovenste helft van de parel met de lichtste kleur (dark leafgreen nr:62), Vervolgens teken je een gebogen lijn die ongeveer het centrum van de bol aangeeft maar dan in 3D, ook met de lichtste kleur. Het lijkt een beetje op de evenaar van een wereldbol. Het is hier iets zwaarder aangezet, anders is het niet te zien, maar zelf dus iets lichter kleuren.
(You start by determining the place of the lightsource, in this case right above the pearl. Then very gentle you draw a circle in the top half of the pearl with the lightest color, (dark leafgreen nr:62). Next you draw a belt, which represents the centre of the pearl in 3D, also with the lightest color. It looks like the equator of a globe. In the pictures it is colored more, otherwise you can't see it. But color very gently.)
2 - Vervolgens kleur je de bovenste helft, behalve het cirkeltje, lichtjes in met de lichtste kleur. (Next you color the area of the top half of the pearl, except the with circle.)

3 - Met de donkerste kleur (prussian blue nr:58) kleur je een heel dun randje langs de rand van de parel, bovenaan iets dunner dan de rest en je kleurt opnieuw over de "evenaar"'.
(With the darkest color (prussian blue nr:58) you color a very thin line at the edge of the pearl, on top the line is the thinnest. Again you color the belt.)
4 - Met de lichtste kleur (dark leafgreen nr:62) kleur je nu ook de onderste helft lichtjes in.
(With the lightest color (dark leafgreen nr:62) you color the bottom half of the pearl.)

5 - Met de donkerste kleur (prussian blue nr:58) ga je nu weer de randen doen en het midden, "de evenaar" van de parel. Het accent ligt op de twee driehoekige stukjes aan weerszijde in het midden van de parel, zie de pijlen.
(With the darkest color (prusiian blue nr:58) you color again the outer edge of the pearl and the belt. The accent lies on the two triangular spots on either side of the centre of the pearl, see the arrows.)
6 - Met nog steeds de donkerste kleur, kleur je nu lichtjes over de onderste helft van de parel, wat eerst met de lichtste kleur was ingekleurd. Tot zover hebben we de video gevolgd, de volgende stappen zijn nu anders.
(Still with the darkest color, you color gently the lower half of the pearl, the section which was colored first with the lightest color. Up till now we have followed the video, the next steps will be different.)

7 - Met de middelste kleur (cobalt blue nr:55) ga je nu in de bovenst helft van de parel mengen op de overgang van de donkere en de lichte kleur, dit doe je met iets meer druk. Dit doe je ook op de onderste helft van de parel, Vervolgens kleur je ook nog lichtjes over het donkerste gedeelte heen, de parelrand en de "evenaar".
(Start blending with the middle blue color (cobalt blue nr:55) where the dark color changes to the light color at the top half of the pearl, with slightly more pressure than in the first steps. Do this also at the bottom half of the pearl. Next you color very lightly with the middle color over the dark parts of the pearl, the ege and the belt.)
8 - Met de donkerste kleur (prussian blue nr:58) ga je de parelrand en "de evenaar" weer donkerder kleuren met iets meer druk, het accent ligt weer op de driehoekige stukjes aan weerszijde van "de evenaar", zie de pijlen in plaatjes 5.
(With the darkest color (prussian blue nr:58) you color again the edge of the pearl and the belt with a little more pressure, the focus is on the dark triangular spots on either side of the pearls centre.)

9 - Met de middelste kleur (cobalt bleu nr: 55) ga je weer op de overgang tussen de donkere en lichtere kleuren mengen met iets hardere druk, zowel bij de bovenste als onderste highlight. Zorg wel dat je genoeg lichte kleur rond de highlight overhoudt.
(With the middle blue color (cobalt blue nr:55), you blend again on the transition from the dark to light color with more pressure, at the upper and lower part of the pearl. Make sure there is still enough light color around the white spot (highlight.)
10 - Met de lichtste kleur (dark leafgreen nr: 62) meng je nu de kleuren op de bovenste helft boven "de evenaar" van de parel met iets meer druk. Hierbij zorg je dat het witte stipje wit blijft.
(With the lightest color (dark leafgreen nr:62)  blend the colors at the upper half of the pearl above the belt, with a bit more pressure. Take care that the white spot  stays white.)

11 - Om de kleuren in de bovenste helft van de parel echt goed te mengen, pak je het witte potlood en met flink wat druk (zorg dat je het papier niet beschadigd) meng je hierbij de kleuren.
(To blend the colors at the upper half of the pearl, burnish the upper half with the white pencil, with such pressure that you don't damage the paper.)
12 - Om weer wat kleur terug te krijgen in de bovenste helft in de parel, ga je lichtjes met alle drie de kleuren weer erover heen van donker aan de buitenkant tot licht in het midden iets buiten het witte stipje. Met de lichtste kleur potlood (dark leafgreen nr:62) meng je de kleuren op de onderste helft van de parel.
(To bring back some color at the upper half of the pearl, start coloring again gently from the outside inwards, with al three colors, from dark to light. Leave a bit untouched around the white spot (the highlight). With the lightest color (dark leafgreen nr:62) blend the lower part of the pearl.)

 13 - Wanneer de onderste helft te licht is geworden, kan je ook hier weer wat donkere kleur terugbrengen, door zachtjes met de donkerste kleur potlood en middelste kleur potlood over de randen van de onderste helft van de parel te kleuren. Stap  11 en 12 kan je eventueel nog een keer lichtjes herhalen, tot het naar je zin is.
(When the lowe part of the pearl became too light, you can bring back some color again, by gently coloring the edges with the darkest and middle color pencils. You can repeat step 11 and 12 if you like gently till you like the result.)
14 - Als laatste, kleur je nog een keer met de middelste kleur zachtjes over het lichte gedeelte van de onderste helft van de parel. Et voila de parel is klaar!
(finally you color again with the middle and or dark color gently over the lower part of the pearl. And your pearl is finished!
